Do I Need to be Fluent to Study Abroad?

English Level

Here is a question students often wonder about, and the answer is no, you do not. Proficiency of the English language is not mandatory to participate in the Go Campus program. Studying abroad is actually the best way to learn and improve a new language.

Alexandra from France had very basic knowledge of the English language when she applied with Go Campus. “It definitely helped me with my English skills; I went from ESL level 4 to being fluent.” Andrea, on the other hand, was already comfortable in the language when she started her undergraduate studies in the USA, but was still surprised to see how much her language skills improved. “Even though I came here with a good baggage, I’ve learn a lot, now I speak like a native US citizen.”

So what are your options based on your English level?

TOEFL or IELTS

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) are the two English proficiency tests accepted by colleges and universities in the USA to evaluate a student’s level of English. These tests will measure your ability to use and understand the English language. Any student wishing to enroll directly into undergraduate or graduate studies will have to present a TOEFL or IELTS score when applying. Minimum scores for undergraduate and graduate enrollment vary from institution to institution, but there is no minimum requirement to be admitted on the Go Campus program.

ESL

ESL (English as a Second Language) courses are designed for international students who need to improve their English proficiency to be able to follow university level classes. Any student who chooses not to take the TOEFL or IELTS, or does not meet the minimum requirement to be directly enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, will be required to start their studies in the USA with ESL courses. The majority of our partner institutions offer a designated ESL program on campus, making the transition to the undergraduate or graduate program once the required English level is achieved by the student very easy.
